Linear Workstations for IT Offices in Pune: Sizes, Layouts and Cost Factors
Short answer: A linear workstation is a straight run of desks that share legs, a partition and a cable raceway. It is the most space-efficient way to seat a team, which is why most IT offices in Pune use it. Common desk sizes are 1,050, 1,200 and 1,350 mm wide by 600 mm deep per person. Cost depends mainly on desk size, board and leg type, partition material and how the cabling is handled.
Walk into almost any software office in Kharadi, Viman Nagar, Magarpatta or Hinjewadi and you will see the same thing: long rows of desks, a screen or partition down the middle, monitors on both sides. That is a linear workstation. This guide explains the choices behind it, so that you can read a quote properly.
What is a linear workstation?
It is a modular desking system where several seats are built as one continuous unit. Instead of each desk having four legs and its own wiring, the run shares structure and services. There are two basic forms:
- Single-sided (non-sharing): one row of seats, usually against a wall or a window.
- Double-sided (sharing or face-to-face): two rows facing each other with a shared partition and raceway in the middle. This is the most common form in IT offices.
What are the standard linear workstation sizes?
| Desk size per seat (W x D) | Suits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1,050 x 600 mm | Laptop users, support and call-centre seats | Highest density; tight for two monitors |
| 1,200 x 600 mm | Most IT and back-office roles | The usual default; fits one large or two small monitors |
| 1,350 x 600 mm | Developers and analysts with dual monitors | More elbow room, fewer seats per row |
| 1,500 x 600 or 750 mm | Team leads, designers | Comfortable, but takes noticeably more floor |
Desk height is normally 730 to 750 mm. Depth of 600 mm works for flat monitors; go to 750 mm if people use large screens or spread out drawings and papers.
Linear, L-shape or cluster: which layout should an IT office choose?
| Type | Space use | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Linear | Most efficient | Development, testing, support and operations teams |
| L-shape | Needs more area per seat | Managers, roles with paperwork plus screen work |
| Cluster (120-degree or pods) | Moderate | Small collaborative teams, creative work |
For teams where every seat is a screen and a keyboard, linear wins on both space and cost. If you are still deciding how open the floor should be, see our comparison of open-plan and cabin layouts.
How much space do linear workstations need?
The desk is only part of it. Plan for:
- Chair space: roughly 900 to 1,000 mm behind each desk so a person can push back and stand up.
- Main aisles: around 1,200 mm so two people can pass.
- Secondary aisles: around 900 mm.
- Back-to-back rows: about 1,800 mm between desk edges so two people can sit back to back and someone can still walk through.
A double-sided run of eight seats at 1,200 mm (four on each side) is about 4.8 m long and 1.2 m wide before chairs and aisles.
Which partition height is right?
- No partition or a low modesty screen: very open, good for teams that talk constantly.
- Desk-mounted screen, 300 to 450 mm above the top: the common choice; blocks the face-to-face view while keeping the floor bright.
- Floor-standing partition, 1,200 to 1,350 mm: seated privacy, useful for focused work.
Partitions can be laminate, fabric pin-up board, glass, a whiteboard surface or a combination. Fabric and acoustic panels help with noise; glass keeps things bright.
How is cabling handled?
For an IT office this is the most important design point. Each seat typically needs power sockets and data points. Options include:
- Central raceway: a metal or aluminium channel between the two rows that carries power and data separately, with sockets at desk level.
- Under-desk cable tray: hides adaptors and excess cable.
- Wire managers and grommets: openings in the top for monitor and laptop cables.
- Vertical cable riser: brings cables from the floor box or wall into the raceway.
Share your electrical and network plan before the workstation design is frozen. The run should start where the floor box or wall feed is, not the other way round.
What affects the cost of linear workstations?
We do not publish a per-seat price because two workstations that look alike can be built very differently. These are the factors that move the number:
- Desk size. Bigger tops use more board.
- Board type and thickness. Pre-laminated particle board, MDF, HDHMR and plywood are priced differently.
- Leg and frame type. Board gable legs, powder-coated metal legs and aluminium systems sit at different price points.
- Partition. None, laminate, fabric, glass or acoustic.
- Raceway and electricals. Whether sockets and data plates are included.
- Storage. Fixed or mobile pedestals, with or without locks.
- Accessories. Keyboard trays, CPU trolleys, monitor arms.
- Quantity and site. Larger orders reduce the per-seat cost; upper floors without a service lift add handling time.
When you compare quotes, make sure all of them are for the same size, board, leg type and partition. Our checklist for choosing an office furniture manufacturer in Pune shows what an itemised quote should contain.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard size of a linear workstation?
The most common size is 1,200 mm wide by 600 mm deep per seat at a height of about 750 mm. Sizes of 1,050 mm and 1,350 mm are used for higher density or for dual-monitor users.
How many linear workstations fit in 1,000 sq ft?
It depends on what else is on the floor. With a cabin, a meeting room and a pantry, around 12 to 16 seats is typical. A fully open floor with 1,200 mm desks can seat more. A scaled layout gives the real number.
Can linear workstations be extended later?
Yes. Modular runs can be extended with add-on seats if there is floor space at the end of the row, and the same finish can be repeated.
