Height-Adjustable Desks in Pune: Are They Worth It for Your Office?

Height-Adjustable Desks in Pune: Are They Worth It for Your Office?

Short answer: A height-adjustable (sit-stand) desk is worth the extra cost for people who spend most of the day at a screen, such as developers, designers and analysts. It is usually not needed for every seat. Most Pune offices get the best value by giving sit-stand desks to a part of the team, or by setting up a few shared standing points, and keeping fixed-height workstations for the rest.

We get asked about sit-stand desks in almost every second office enquiry now, mostly from IT teams around Kharadi, Viman Nagar and Hinjewadi. The interest is real, but so is the confusion. This guide covers what these desks actually do, where they make sense, and what to look for so that you do not pay for a feature nobody uses after the first month.

What is a height-adjustable desk?

It is a desk whose top can be raised or lowered so the user can work sitting or standing. A typical fixed office desk is around 730 to 750 mm high. A sit-stand desk generally travels from about 700 mm up to around 1,200 mm, which covers sitting and standing positions for most adults.

There are three common mechanisms:

Type How it moves Good for Keep in mind
Electric, single motor Push button, one motor drives both legs Regular single-monitor use Lower load capacity, slower
Electric, dual motor Push button, one motor per leg Dual monitors, heavier tops Costs more, needs a power point at each desk
Manual crank Hand crank Occasional adjustment, tight budgets People tend to stop adjusting it

Do sit-stand desks really help?

They help with one specific problem: sitting in the same position for hours. Changing posture through the day reduces stiffness in the lower back, neck and shoulders. A standing desk is not exercise and it does not replace a good chair. Standing all day is tiring in its own way. The benefit comes from switching, for example standing for 15 to 20 minutes in every hour.

So the honest answer is that the desk only works if people use the adjustment. In offices where it works well, we usually see three things: a memory preset so the height changes at one touch, a monitor arm so the screen stays at eye level in both positions, and a manager who uses it too.

Who in the office should get one?

  • Good fit: people at a screen for six hours or more, anyone with a history of back or neck trouble, and teams that do long focused work.
  • Less useful: sales and field staff who are away from the desk half the day, reception, and hot desks used for short periods.
  • Shared option: two or three standing-height tables near the work area, where anyone can take a laptop for a short call or a quick review.

What should you check before buying height-adjustable desks in Pune?

  1. Height range. Check the lowest and highest position against your shortest and tallest team members.
  2. Load capacity. Add up the weight of the top, monitors, monitor arm and CPU holder. Leave a margin.
  3. Stability at full height. Raise the desk fully and push the corner gently. Some wobble is normal; a lot of wobble is not.
  4. Noise and speed. In an open office, a loud motor gets annoying quickly.
  5. Anti-collision. Good frames stop when they hit a chair arm or a pedestal.
  6. Cable management. This is the most ignored point. Cables must have enough slack to travel with the top. Ask for a cable tray under the top and a flexible cable spine to the floor.
  7. Top size and material. A top of 1,200 x 600 mm suits one monitor; 1,500 x 750 mm is more comfortable for two. The top should be thick enough not to flex at standing height.
  8. Power backup behaviour. Ask what happens to electric desks during a power cut and whether they need resetting afterwards.
  9. Service. Motors and control boxes are the parts that fail. Ask who services them locally in Pune.

How do sit-stand desks fit into a workstation layout?

This is where planning matters. Fixed linear workstations share legs, partitions and a common cable raceway. Sit-stand desks move independently, so they need their own frame, a gap from the neighbouring desk and separate cable routing. A few practical points:

  • Leave a small gap between adjacent tops so they do not rub when one moves.
  • Fixed partitions at standing height look odd; desk-mounted screens that travel with the top work better.
  • Pedestals should be mobile and kept clear of the moving top.
  • Plan one power point per desk at the design stage, not after the flooring is done.

If you are planning a new floor, it helps to decide the mix early. Our guide on buying office furniture direct from a manufacturer explains why made-to-measure layouts handle this kind of mix more easily than ready stock.

A sensible mix for a Pune office

For a 30-seat office, a common and practical split looks like this: fixed linear workstations for most of the team, sit-stand desks for the people who asked for them or who do long screen work, and one standing-height table near the pantry or collaboration zone. You can always add more adjustable desks later if the first few are being used well.

Frequently asked questions

What is the right height for a standing desk?

Set the top so that your elbows bend at roughly 90 degrees with your shoulders relaxed, and the top of the monitor is at or just below eye level. This is different for every person, which is why the height range matters more than any single number.

Are height-adjustable desks worth it for a small office?

Yes, if they go to the people who will use them. In a small office, two or three sit-stand desks plus fixed desks for the rest is usually a better use of budget than converting every seat.

Do electric standing desks need special wiring?

They need a normal power point at each desk and cables with enough slack to move with the top. It is easiest to plan this before the furniture layout is finalised.

Can a standing desk replace an ergonomic chair?

No. Most people still sit for most of the day. A good chair and a correctly set desk height matter just as much.
