Executive Desk and Director Table Guide: Sizes, Shapes and Finishes

Executive Desk and Director Table Guide: Sizes, Shapes and Finishes

Short answer: An executive or director table is usually 1,800 to 2,100 mm wide, 900 mm deep and 750 mm high, with a side return for the computer and a credenza behind for storage. Choose the size from the cabin, leaving about 1,000 mm behind the desk and 1,200 mm in front. Laminate is the practical finish, veneer the premium one. A clean top with hidden cables matters more to the overall impression than an expensive material.

The director’s table is the one piece of office furniture that is bought partly for how it looks. That is reasonable, since clients, bankers and senior hires sit across it. But it also has to work as a desk every day. This guide covers both sides.

What sizes do executive desks come in?

Type Main top (W x D) Suits cabin size
Manager desk 1,500 to 1,650 x 750 mm 80 to 120 sq ft
Senior manager desk 1,800 x 800 to 900 mm 120 to 160 sq ft
Director or MD table 2,100 x 900 mm 160 to 250 sq ft
Large boardroom-style desk 2,400 x 1,000 mm 250 sq ft and above

Height is 750 mm. A depth of 900 mm gives room for a visitor to place a laptop or papers on their side of the desk.

Which shape should you choose?

Shape What it is Best for
Straight desk Single top, pedestal below Meeting-focused roles; smaller cabins
Desk with side return (L) Main top plus a lower or same-height side unit Most executives; screen on the return, main top free
Desk with return and back unit (U) Main top, side return and credenza forming a U Large cabins; maximum surface and storage
Desk with attached meeting end Main top extends into a round or oval end for visitors Executives who review work with two or three people often

How much space does a director table need?

  • Behind the desk, for the chair and access to the credenza: about 1,000 to 1,200 mm
  • In front, for visitor chairs and movement: about 1,200 mm
  • At the side, to walk around: about 750 to 900 mm

Example: a 2,100 x 900 mm table with a credenza needs a cabin at least about 3.6 m deep (credenza 450 + chair zone 1,050 + desk 900 + visitor zone 1,200) and about 3.6 m wide. That is roughly 140 sq ft before adding a sofa or a discussion table.

Laminate, veneer or something else?

Finish Look Practical notes
Laminate (matte or textured wood grain) Clean, consistent Scratch and stain resistant; easy care; widest choice
Natural veneer with polish Warm, real wood grain Premium; needs coasters and gentle cleaning; can be re-polished
PU or lacquer Smooth painted finish Elegant; shows scratches more easily
Leatherette or leather inlay Classic writing pad area A detail, not a full top
Glass or stone accent Modern, sharp Use in panels or a strip; a full glass top shows fingerprints and cables

Walnut, teak and dark oak tones with a contrasting lighter or darker storage unit remain the most popular choice in Pune cabins. A two-tone combination, such as a wood-grain top on a charcoal base, looks current without dating quickly.

What goes into the structure?

  • Top: a thick top, or a 25 mm top with a deeper front edge, looks substantial and stays flat over a 2 m span.
  • Core: plywood or HDHMR handles long spans and repeated use better than standard particle board.
  • Base: panel legs with a modesty panel, or metal legs for a lighter look.
  • Edges: thick, well-finished edges; this is where quality is most visible.

Storage: what does an executive actually need?

  • A lockable pedestal with two box drawers and a file drawer
  • A side return with a shelf or drawers for the CPU, printer and daily files
  • A credenza behind the chair for box files, personal items and display
  • Optional overhead or wall unit, kept light so the room does not feel closed

The aim is a clear main top. Everything that is not used every hour should have a place off it.

Cable management on an executive desk

Nothing spoils a good desk faster than trailing wires. Plan these at the design stage:

  • A floor box or wall point directly under or behind the desk
  • A flip-up power box or grommet on the return, not the main top
  • A cable tray under the top and a vertical cable cover down one leg
  • A wireless charger recess or a discreet charging point on the visitor side

More on this in our office cable management guide.

Details that make a desk look premium

  • A deep front modesty panel with a groove, fluted or contrasting inlay
  • Handle-less or profile-handle drawers
  • Soft-close drawer channels
  • A slim metal or wood trim line around the top
  • Concealed LED under the credenza or behind a back panel
  • Matching visitor-side detailing, since that is the side guests see

Common mistakes

  1. A desk too large for the cabin, leaving no room to walk
  2. High-gloss tops that show every mark
  3. Monitor on the main top, blocking the view of visitors
  4. No power point on the visitor side for laptops
  5. Storage with no locks
  6. Choosing the desk before fixing the electrical points

Ready-made or made to order?

Ready-made executive desks come in fixed sizes and a few finishes. Cabins vary a lot in shape, so a made-to-order table usually fits better, matches the rest of the office furniture and can be designed around your electrical points. The benefits are explained in buying office furniture direct from a manufacturer. Standard sizes for other furniture are in our office furniture dimensions chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a director table?

About 1,800 to 2,100 mm wide, 900 mm deep and 750 mm high, usually with a side return and a back credenza.

Is veneer better than laminate for an executive desk?

Veneer looks richer because it is real wood, but it needs more care. Laminate is tougher and easier to maintain. Many offices use veneer only for the director’s cabin and boardroom.

What is a side return on an executive desk?

A smaller table attached at a right angle to the main desk. It usually holds the computer and has storage below, keeping the main top free.
